Abstract: "The USGS/WHOI Continental Margin (CONMAR) Data set was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a joint program of study of the Atlantic continental margin of the US. The CONMAR set contains information for 3,715 cores, dredges, and grab samples, and consists of 20 files of grain size analyses/statistical parameters, composition of clay, sand, gravel and carbonate fractions, organic contents, heavy mineral and x-ray analyses, radioactivity counts, and major chemical and trace-element analyses. "
Purpose: The purpose of this data layer is to release a digital version of the coring data from the Continental Margin Program and for inclusion in the usSEABED data collection.

Title: USGS Continental Margin (CONMAR) Sediment File, NGDC Data Set G00253
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: tabular digital data
Completeness_Report: Data from the original study with WHOI on the Continental Margin (WHOI Technical Report 71-15) was released to National Geophysical Data Center* ( NGDC) in card format. This includes texture, chemistry, mineralogy, oceanographic data, etc. The sample numbers in group 1 are a letter followed by 3 digits; the samples in group 2 are 4 digits. There were also photographs collected at this time which were released on OFR01-154. (*Note that lines 600 and 620 (gravel analysis) were somehow corrupt). NGDC is the only place the entire ConMar data set has been released in digital format. ~1994: J. Hathaway released on the web all the texture data which was available. The East Coast Sediment Texture Database (ECSTDB) at that time was comprised of data organized in 3 groups: groups 1 and 2 were from the ConMar study mentioned above. Group 3 was data analyzed in the lab here in Woods Hole. Group 3 sample numbers run from AA001 to AJ523. OFR00-358 is an updated release of the ECSTDB. It again contains the ConMar data as well as the data analyzed in Woods Hole. The sample numbers in the ECSTDB now run from AA001 to AQ841. All the fields relating to data specific to the ConMar project (ie Secchi, Forel, #photos) were eliminated.
